2012-06-15 - BioVectra Expands Fermentation and Contract Manufacturing Facilities - $50 Million Investment

BioVectra’s has invested $50 million to expand its facilities and technical capabilities in Charlottetown, Canada in response to its rapid growth as a biopharmaceutical industry partner.

Three separate initiatives will be brought to completion in 2012, supporting BioVectra’s corporate strategy as a pharmaceutical company with extensive capabilities in contract manufacturing of both biologic and chemical APIs, intermediates and finished dose products.

First, the company expanded its cGMP facility with the addition of a second fermentation train.  This fully qualified and compliant 1500 L fermentation unit is dedicated to the production of clinical and commercial products. The self-contained unit increases BioVectra’s capacity to handle clinical-stage projects and related downstream processing services.    The 1500 L ABEC automated fermentation system and a 130 L New Brunswick Scientific automated bioflow fermentation system are contained within a Class 100,000 area.  An adjoining downstream Class 10,000 processing area houses a Class 100 biocontainment hood and a Class 100 laminar flow benchtop.

Next, BioVectra is initiating production in a new wing dedicated to the manufacture of up to 50 metric tons of a new drug substance.

BioVectra is also in the construction stage for a new facility designed to manufacture specific APIs for a dedicated customer base.

Along with these initiatives, the company’s staff will grow from 150 to more than 250 skilled personnel.

“While contract manufacturing is a highly competitive, cost-driven business, BioVectra has hit its stride in being a strategic partner to our clients,” stated Dale Zajicek, President of BioVectra.   “We have proven our ability to work with clients from the earlier clinical stages on up to commercial supply, and remain in-step with clients in terms of matching manufacturing scale and capabilities to their needs.    Our continued investments speak for themselves – we are committed to serving the industry with quality products and services, and specialized capabilities to support the success of our clients.”
